== Death == On February 21, 1961, Jones died of lung cancer at age 67 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, predeceasing his wife, Lucille. == Pathophysiology == In normal metabolism, the elevated blood glucose level causes beta (β) cells in the Islets of Langerhans, located in the pancreas, to release insulin into the blood. The insulin makes insulin-sensitive tissues in the body (primarily skeletal muscle cells, adipose tissue, and liver) absorb glucose which provides energy as well as lowers blood glucose, in a negative feedback loop. The beta cells reduce insulin output as the blood glucose level falls, allowing blood glucose to settle at a homeostatic constant level of approximately 5 mmol/L (90 mg/dL). In an insulin-resistant individual, normal levels of insulin do not have the same effect in controlling blood glucose levels. When the body produces insulin under conditions of insulin resistance, the cells are unable to absorb or use glucose as effectively and it stays in the bloodstream. Certain cell types such as fat and muscle cells require insulin to absorb glucose and when these cells fail to respond adequately to circulating insulin, blood glucose levels rise. Skeletal muscle is thought to be particularly important in this regard. The liver normally helps regulate glucose levels by reducing its secretion of glucose in the presence of insulin. However, in insulin resistance, this normal reduction in the liver's glucose production may not occur, further contributing to elevated blood glucose. In 1953, a reader letter to the Philadelphia Bulletin reported that Italian-Americans working at the World War I–era shipyard known as Hog Island, where emergency shipping was produced for the war effort, introduced the sandwich by putting various meats, cheeses, and lettuce between two slices of bread. This became known as the "Hog Island" sandwich; shortened to "Hoggies", then the "hoagie". Dictionary.com offers the following origin of the term hoagie - n. American English (originally Philadelphia) word for "hero, large sandwich made from a long, split roll"; originally hoggie (c. 1936), traditionally said to be named for the jazz musician Hoagy Carmichael (1899–1981), but the use of the word predates his celebrity and the original spelling seems to suggest another source (perhaps "hog"). The modern spelling dates from about 1945; it may have been altered by influence of Carmichael's nickname. The Philadelphia Almanac and Citizen's Manual offers a different explanation saying the sandwich was created by early-twentieth-century street vendors called "hokey-pokey men", who sold antipasto salad, meats, cookies, and buns with a cut in them. When Gilbert and Sullivan's operetta H.M.S. Pinafore opened in Philadelphia in 1879, bakeries produced a long loaf called the pinafore. Entrepreneurial "hokey-pokey men" sliced the loaf in half, stuffed it with antipasto salad, and sold the world's first "hoagie". This hypothesis seems unlikely, as "hokey pokey" men were known street vendors of an ice cream product.

Another $19 billion in claims remained under investigation for fraud. At the same time, legitimate claimants faced lengthy delays in receiving benefits. The state's unemployment system had been overseen by California Labor Secretary Julie Su, a Newsom appointee, whom President Joe Biden later appointed as deputy secretary of labor in February 2021. Political opponents attributed the crisis to the Newsom administration's failure to heed multiple warnings by federal officials of the potential for fraud, while Newsom's administration said the Trump administration's failure to provide appropriate guidance for the new federally funded program contributed to the fraud. Experts said much of the fraud appeared to originate from international criminal gangs in 20 countries. A report by California State Auditor Elaine Howle said $810 million was disbursed to claimants who had fraudulently filed on behalf of inmates in the state's prison system. He then worked on three more Xatrix titles for the PC that came out the year after: Redneck Deer Huntin' and Redneck Rampage Rides Again, sequels to the 1997 game; and Quake II Mission Pack: The Reckoning, an expansion pack for the 1997 FPS Quake II. Antonov followed these by working as a level designer for the 1999 PC FPS Kingpin: Life of Crime, which has an art deco aesthetic. The game takes place in a major city, so before its levels were designed, he explored L.A. to get an understanding of city layouts.
